Hello, how are you? I received your letter about your trip to Malaysia next month. I can’t wait to meet you!
In your letter, you’ve asked about Malaysian food. As you know, Malaysia, as a multi-racial country, is famous for its delicacy of different ethnics.
The most famous Malay food in Malaysia would definitely be ‘nasi lemak’ and satay. Nasi lemak is actually cooked with coconut milk (which is also known as ‘santan’), which is served with cucumber, fried peanuts, anchovies and sambal. Satay is pieces of meat poked through with a stick, then grilled. It’s something like ‘Yakitori’ in Japan. However, as the Malays do not eat pork, satay is either made of chicken, beef or lamb. You might find rabbit meat grilled too.
For Indian food, you may find ‘roti canai’, ‘naan’, ‘teh tarik’, nasi Bryani and others. They must eat with curry. All of these you may get it in any ‘mamak’ stalls. ‘Mamak’ means the Indian Muslims, so most of the stalls are run by the mamak. ‘Mamak’ culture can be only found in Malaysia, you must experience it when you come here.
For Chinese, we have food such as fried kuey teow, dim sum, teo-chew porridge, fish head beehoon, laksa, prawn mee, and a lot more. Since you are coming over to my place, you must not miss the most famous food in my hometown: Bakuteh! Bakuteh is pork cooked with various herbs, served in claypot. I’ve been having it since young, and I’m still loving it.
